Thursday Thirteen #7

I recently stumbled across a site called Ruined Music and it got me thinking about all those song out there forever tied to the people in our lives. In the case of this site, obviously, the influence was not for the better.

You know what I am talking about. You're in your car minding your own business and BAM! The DJ lobs a musical bomb in your car that brings forth memories of people, places, and things that get under your skin. Your upper lip lifts into an Elvis like sneer of distaste as the memories roll forth.

The person is usually, though not always, an Ex of some sort. Occasionally it can be an unknown, but highly memorable individual; people whose path's cross yours briefly; places you have been; or in my case, one vertically challenged celebrity Scientologist.

In honor of this strange phenomenom I bring you:

13 songs Forever Tainted and Those Who Shall Be Held Responsible.

1. I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing - Aerosmith - The Ex Boyfriend Variety - I have hardcore memories on this song and more than 1 private joke. Cheesy Song, yes, but dammit I liked it! Grr.

2. Fade Into You - Mazzy Star - EXBFV - More like fade into oblivion.
*Update* It's 5:02pm, Do you know what your DJ is playing? Cause mine is playing this. Grr.

3. Why Georgia - John Mayer - EXBFV - This is a no brainer. It is not strictly ruined as I still listen to it, but it can make me highly bitter and pissy given that the dipshit lives in Georgia. I love Georgia. He just irks me.

4. Melt With You - Modern English - The Burger King Corporation - You bastards took one of the golden aural memories of my teenage years and turned it into a burger commercial. Thanks.

5. Mr. Kite - The Beatles - Fat Lady At The Circus - When I was a wee young lass my mother took me to see Ringling Brothers circus. Everything was great except for a certain smell which just got worse and worse and worse. At first I thought it was the elephants. But then the awful truth dawned on me. It was the Super Sized woman in front of me. To this day I do not know if it was her own personal "parfume" or if she merely had the worlds worst gas. My apologies to the elephants.

6. Crazy In Love - Beyonce - Jo Jo from WB Superstar - Did anyone else catch this show? It was like Idol except they purposefully picked the worst singers and told them they were smokin hot. Jo Jo and his badonkadonk killed this song for me. I dare you to listen to it. I Double Dare you.

7. Barbie Girl - Aqua - Street Dude Named Zeus in Eugene Oregon - He wore the inside cardboard rolls from toilet paper in his hair to elevate his pony tail. And he was rumored to do unmentionable things with Barbie Dolls and his badonkadonk. Shudder

8. Suspicious Mind - Elvis Presley - "Elvis" the street performer at the Portland Saturday Market - Yet another questionable psycho that has done damage to a song I liked. Check out Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations on Monday January 15th. Anthony is in the Pacific NW for that show and I spied Elvis in the Promo. He is a see it to believe it street icon.

9. You Lost That Lovin Feeling - The Righteous Brothers - Tom Friggin Cruise - Oh how I loathe him. And I have loathed him since the 80's. Since Top Gun, in fact. Smirking, smarmy little wanker. Turn and Burn this *insert rude finger gesture* Tom.

10. Kokomo - The Beach Boys -I repeat, Tom Friggin Cruise - Maverick once again pooped all over a song I liked. I wanted him to slip and have an ass-i-dent with one of those cocktail bottles.

11. The Entire Wild At Heart Soundtrack - Various Artists - The Ex Husband Variety - Long ago in a galaxy far away, the ex was not a complete ass.

12. Dear 23 - The Entire Album - The Posies - EXHV - Yet another casualty.

13. Karma Chameleon - Culture Club - T, My High School Friend and Once and Former Flame - This was one of many songs he would get bombed and sing in a highly stylized way that mocked the original singer. He was more Boy than Boy George. He was more Jovi than Bon. His rendition of this song is permanently burned into my brain. The fact that he is also The Ex Husband Variety's cousin, and therefore my kidlet's cousin, is just bizarre to me. I pray that is not a familial trait.

Oh, I know exactly what you mean!! Outkast was completely ruined for me since I used to love to dance with my EXBF to them. *pout* Guns n' Roses' "Don't You Cry" was once ruined, but I reclaimed it.

p.s. I linked you too!

We aims to please, Bernie!

Raggedy - Thanks! I will be making the rounds of the TT list this afternoon.

Buttercup - Thanks for the linkie! And I would be chapped if I lost Outkast.

Okay, being that I absolutely love music, this was a really cool post. I might have to do that sometime. I loved it.

Happy TT and I’m up!

And, I also thought I'd invite you to join What the BLOG!?

It's a relatively new community that a friend created and that would, very much, like to see new members. We are also working on creating a community tradition if you will (something like a TT or like that). Suggestions are welcome. Go on over and take a look at What the BLOG!?

Great list and oh so true.

It's made me think of my ruined music now...noooo.....

I did a music based TT as well. Yours is funnier though hehe.

It's so bittersweet the memories that music can conjure up. Cool list! :)

Regarding number 4: HP took The Cure's Pictures of You, some car commercial used The Clash's London Calling, and the Coors company (or whoever owns them) used Jane's Addiction's Coming Down the Mountain. The commercials never ruined the songs for me, but it did irk me for the longest time. Of course, my irritation was misplaced. It was the artists, after all, who sold themselves.

Oh, I did think of one that I used to love, but will quickly turn off if I hear it playing: Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven. That song was playing in my car when I had a pretty serious car accident as a teenager, and to this day, I just don't want to hear it.

Oh, is it too late to participate in Thursday 13? Do you just take that code from your page, and add your own? How do you track back?

Starrlight said...

Nope Belle it is not too late. Just head over the Thursday 13 website and post a comment on todays post. The hand linkies are courtesy of Mr Linkie
http://www.blenza.com/linkies/

You just make an account and then follow create widget instructions. You need to put the header code into your template the first time around and then every week after you can log in and create a widget for Wordless Wednesday and Thursday 13 and a few others. Very handy!

Oh hey I just tried to leave a comment for ya but blogger is being an issue ridden hooker right now =( Basically what I said was GET SOME REST!

very interesting prompt; loathe that 'you lost that lovin feeling'; but for different reasons. just plain a whiney song.

Oh Lordy you have to be my evil twin! That and I think we may have the same ex-boyfriends because some of those songs were ruined for me to by them.... Anyways Happy TT!!!

I hate it when a song I love is played in a commercial...it ruins it.

Found you on WtB!

Susan Helene Gottfried said...

I'm sorry you've had so many good songs ruined. But I like the idea of reclaiming some of them. Some of them should maybe stay gone. Karma Chameleon? Man, it's dated-sounding.

Happy TT!

Isn't it sad we let people and situations spoil great songs..? I know what you mean, great list!
My tt is about personal stuff from my past.

I have the same number 7 - except instead of a barbie ass man, I was forced to sing that song repeatedly by my best friend - and not once did I ever get to be Barbie.

That bloke T (your High School Friend and Once and Former Flame) scarred you for life I see!

Love the songs and even more your association to them! mouaaaaaaaaaaaah

Hmmmm...how exactly do you really feel about Tom Cruise?

It must not be good - since he has ruined two songs for you.

Uisce said...

a very interesting way to look at music. I wonder what I'd find if I thought about music that's been ruined for me.

Starrlight said...

I LOATHE Tom Cruise. He has always *always* struck me as smary as a slug. I was not at all shocked when he started jumping on couches and acting like the village idiot :P

Desert Songbird said...

I love music, and I would rather have a sad memory associated with a song (e.g., my parents and our rocky relationship connected with U2's "Sometimes You Can't Make it On Your Own") rather than some damnable ex-whatever ruin a perfectly good song for me.

I with you on that Cruise Creature, too. He ruined a perfectly good volleyball scene in "Top Gun" just by being in it...

Coco said...

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA (gasp) HAHAHAHAHAHAHA (wipe tears) BWAHAHAHAHA (sigh)

Oh, that was too funny. I have a few of those myself. I had to get over one, once - I can't do without my U2, no matter what. Thanks for the comment on my blog. Hope it's ok, I linked you.

zorak163 said...

I love Fade into You.

I've also just tagged you with The Thinking Meme!

Starrlight said...

Desert Songbird - I KNOW!!! Fubar'd a golden Val Kilmer moment. Yeeck.

Coco - Thank you for the link! I linked ya back. And no man will EVER fubar my U2. They are my favorite band of all time. I started listening to them at the tender age of 12 way back in 1981. There is no guy out there that can mess with that history.

Zorak Tagged Me! I will get right on that this evening.

Oh...Get this the radio just started playing I Still Haven't Found What I Am Looking For. The music god are saluting my no mess with the U2 stance!

So sorry so many good ones are ruined for you! I used to REALLY like Kokomo--could listen to it over and over. Not even Tom Cruise succeeded in ruining for me.

dawn said...

I hate it when commercials (or Tom Cruise for that matter), ruin the music. I just want to enjoy the song without being reminded about a product.

Thanks for visiting my TT

Wylie Kinson said...

OMG - I thought I was the only female on the planet who hated Tom long before his couch jumping antics (which just proved me right all along). I spit on him and his silly movies!! P'TAH!

Justice Fergie said...

Cool TT! I love that you actually wrote out "badonkadonk" :)

thanks for visiting!

Sparky Duck said...

wow, Mazzy Star is dead to me musically to, just for the exwife injuries. Luckily I have only lost Jersey Girl from my Bruce Springsteen collection in my head.

InterstellarLass said...

Mmm. Anything by Jane's Addiction or Maroon 5. Problem is I love Maroon 5. Dave Navarro also ruined JA.

Thomma Lyn said...

What a great idea for a TT! I have a list of songs like that, too -- stinks when songs you love become tainted by something annoying, ouchy, or icky.

Haley-O said...

hee! Superstar! I loved that. But, it was so cruel! But, love it....

Jeremy said...

You have a radio station that plays Mazzy Star? Cool. Billy Bragg was ruined for me by an ex-girlfriend, but it doesn't seem like that much of a loss.

Laughing Muse said...

It's lists like this that make me glad I enjoy stuff that most other folks in North America...have not heard of.

Though - remember the early Victoria's Secret ads for Ipex bras? The ones with the dramatic crescendoing music in the background? That was from the soundtrack to Gladiator. (That didn't ruin it for me...but it did creep me right out the door and down the block.)

Starrlight said...

Wow I am so happy to know there are so many other people out there who find Tom Cruise disturbing and have prior to the Oprah moment. Altough that did provide us with a different perspective on the "O Face" didn't it?

And yes Jeremy I do have a radio station that plays Mazzy Star and Billy Bragg for that matter. And you can listen on the web!
