Me thinks I need to buy this album. I adore Amy Winehouse and Joss Stone both of whom are channeling classic Motown. I really love Duffy's Mercy but I think I like this one even better. America is in a sad state when we have to go to white English girls for that classic soul sound. In this one I am getting the Etta vibe.
So if Bittersweet Symphony is my one Desert Island song, this one would be a close call. This is another one of those songs I could put on repeat and let run all day. I speak from experience when I say that it is perfect for a Hawaiian beach. Oh and for the record this is over and above my U2 songs. I go no where without my U2 :P

Just a quickie as I am wondering around YouTube enjoying the music of my number one band. One was just on BOTH video channels and that sent me in search of lesser played U2 songs and videos.
Everyone has heard this song and it worked well at the end of Reality Bites but the video you don't see very often. As in hardly frickin ever. The band wanted to give a nod to Fellini. These are to my mind some of Bono's finest words and this video captures the words perfectly. The band appears briefly at the end.

Another of my Top 5, heck Top 3, U2 songs and this is a lovely live version. Sure wish this had made it onto Rattle and Hum. There is just something about this one that speaks to me. It is the reason Joshua Tree will for ever and always be my desert island U2.

Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses would have been a monster hit if it had been on any other U2 album, but One kinda stole it's thunder in my mind. I love this song and the video is a snap shot of the Zoo Tour.

And finally one of the heaviest U2 songs I think they have written. Bono says the Achtung Baby is the story of relationships. With each other, our country and our faith and that in the end the line between night and day, love and hate, loyalty and madness are pretty darn thin. If you read the lyrics the song is an extention of Pride, or at the very least it answers the question of "What more?"

Ahhh, Institutionalized. Great Song. Kidlet saw Suicidal Tendencies in concert a few months back with her dad. I have been missing in action for a bit and have some catching up to do so I figured why not wrap it up with a big TT ribbon? So here we have 13 things about my last two weeks that I have either done or have been stuck on my brain. Random is GOOD!
1. Randy Jackson is on The Rag. Seriously, WTF Randy? The only person you were kind to was Rahme-whatever her name was and she SUCKED!
2. David Cook is the best reason to watch Idol. And people getting all pissed cause the judges called him original for his version of Billie Jean because Paula Simon and Randy are not aware it was the Chris Cornell version need to shut the fuck up. He was covering a cover not raping the Mona Lisa. Get over yourselves music snobs.
3. That mini rant brings me to #3 on my list, idiots who stage dive at concerts and don't even know the bands songs. The Presidents concert was awesome and I highly recommend their new album. Truckstop Butterfly and Sharpen Up Those Fangs are classic PUSA. That said, the venue was for all ages and they did a shitastic job of separating the booze area from the main area.
The place was over run with 20 somethings stage diving and crowd surfing and moshing...MOSHING...at a Presidents concert. Before the bands even started some 15 year old boy got all hopped up on Mountain Dew and spewed chunks a good 6 feet right in front of us. So very Linda Blair. Kid got nostril action as well, it was a pretty gnarly barf. Then the fuckers boo'd an opening performance art act, and then doing their sad little "I wish I was around when Punk was new" staging diving crowd surfing routine they managed to unplug the band's amps twice! Rudest Audience EVER. And I have been to metal shows! DIE FUCKING TWENTY SOMETHING DOUCHE BAGS.

#4 Went to a gem show on the Sunday the 16th with Kidlet and Mom. Mom is jeweler and we go every year to get deals on gems and pearls etc. Anyhow, on the way in I slipped and fell on a metal plate cover. Totally screwed up my shoulder. I couldn't move for three days. And that was ON tylenol 3. It sucked. That was the main reason I wasn't posting. It hurt =(
#5 Mom is gonna make me a gorgeous necklace! I bought a double row of briolet citrons and amethyst that mom is going to do up on gold filigree. Think chandelier necklace. Very vintage looking. Mom does awesome jewelry. Especially her pearls. I have pearls I'd have to sell a kidney for because of her. I need to help her set up a website to sell her stuff.
#6 SNOW? WTF? It is Spring Break and apparently the white stuff has been swirling around the metro area. That is ridiculous. This is Oregon and it is nearly April. Bah.
#7 So I have some plans for the summer percolating. Mom is taking kidlet on a car ride trip down the Oregon coast through the Redwoods. I am gonna fly into San Jose and then the three of us are gonna spend some days in San Fran and then drive up to visit some of our family in the Sacramento area. And I am hoping to find a way to swing seeing George Michael up in Seattle. I LOVE me some George. Check out Turnbaby today as she has a divine sample of Gorgeous George.
#8 Ok fair warning, this one is, well, odd. Every single day this week there has been someone in the bathroom at the office ....OBVIOUSLY making a deposit if you know what I mean....and they have been making "yummy noises!!" You know the sounds people make when they take a bit of something good? Add that to a lot of contented sighing and you get what I am talking about here. WHAT. THE. HELL. I am scared to take a leak at work because of this. What is going on in there? Is it contagious? Does it travel? Gah!
#9 I am totally grooving on the new songs from REM and B52. The B52's are playing here in May but I am trying to save up for the George Show since it is in Seattle. Both bands sound like their classic songs. REM in particular sounds like classic IRS years guitar driven REM. I loves me some REM.

#10 My Current Food Craving - Pasta. Been on a major lemon red pepper parsley spicy pasta kick. I am addicted to that stuff. Bless Giada for showing me that recipe.
#11 I am in dire need of Yankee Candle Citrus Sage votive candles. Last 3 times I have gone out to buy them, no love. They smell DIVINE. I want them and I can't find them. ARGH!
#12 When is Charlie Bartlett going to make it to a movie theater? I have been waiting for ages for it. I am crossing fingers that it will come to one of the independent theaters around here. Robert Downey Jr. is the shiz and the nitz. So glad he didn't bite it from the drugs.
#13 Speaking of he who play Julian, for whatever reason an old friend has been on my mind a lot lately. Last time I was obsessing on him like this, it turned out he was having a heart attack at a Dead Show. Sometimes having a strong mental link with someone sucks. So here is a shout out to the powers that be, play nice cause I am gonna be seriously upset if something is wrong with him.
Oh lord am I glad that the auction happens but once a year. We start working in October with planning etc and by January it really starts rolling. March is my busy time since I do the actual cash. It was AWESOME! We had a Queen of Hearts, The Jack of Hearts Page, Allison in Wonderland, The March Hare, and the Mad Hatter. It was gorgeous.
And I WON something!! Seriously, I don't know everthing that is in it but I know I won 2 3 month memberships to 24 hours fitness with a meeting with a trainer, 2 iPod shuffles, and I guess there are tons of gift certificates including a 50 buck one for New Seasons. Can you say HELL YA! Cause I can. AND to top it off our CEO, who is a damn fine guy, announced at our after party that all the auction members and volunteers are gonna get a paid day off! Oh yes =)
Kidlet's dad took her to Music Millennium tonight for a Meet and Greet with Flogging Molly too. It's been a musical week for her. We will have to go have pancakes after the show tomorrow night. It's tradition =)

Watching the Rock Hall of Fame Induction. Love me some Leonard Cohen. Everybody Knows is to my mind every bit as awesome as the often covered Hallelujah. The Ventures should have been in by now if for no other reason that the Hawaii Five 0 theme. It is a damn shame the singer from the Dave Clark Five died two weeks prior to their induction.
Madonna is a given. She may not have true singing pipes but she damn sure understands spectacle and the importance of bringing it as an entertainer. And who knew that ass in the air move in that wedding dress was cause she lost her shoe? And having Iggy Pop perform her songs was a stroke of genius. His version of Burning Up kicked it. Then again, Iggy kicks it.
And then there is my personal favorite of this years inductees. Little Johnny Cougar. I have been a Mellencamp fan since Jack first met Diane. It's true that it has never been cool to be John Cougar fan, but fuck it. I am and always will be. Give me a car, an open road, and some Pink Houses and I am a happy camper. He is an honest songwriter and a great musician.
Ya know if I have often wished I were born Dorothy Gale minus that whole LSD trip. To live on a farm and have that be your career sounds pretty damn nice. Beats the fuck out of society.
Speaking of societal village idiots, McCain has tried using This Is Our Country and ...snort...Pink House. I know McCain likes to play at being Reagan's rightful heir....but does he really want to commit the same campaign music fuck ups?!! Can politicians NOT read? And it is bi-partisan. The lyrics to Beautiful Day are not what they appear to be on first take, but the Dems love it too.

Went and saw Into the Wild today with my dad and then went out to dinner. Excellent movie regardless of your take on Chris McCandless and his quest to find the truth within him. Sean Penn did a wonderful job and didn't candy ass up Chris and try to make him into a saint. He was pretty true to a kid who for all his faults and his obvious hubris in his lack of research for his "Alaska Adventure" was in all honesty only trying to find out who and what he was at his core. As I have said before I totally think he was crazy and arrogant to go out there the way he did. But I don't think his reason for going were either stupid or arrogant. I'd go so far as to say that if more people out there took his advice to look for happiness outside of relationships, the world might be a calmer place and God knows we'd have more respect and take better care of our planet if we'd only stop and take a moment to reconnect with it.
Chris's downfall was hubris which seems to be a trait our species is mighty prone to. Dad and I were talking about that and I can see to a certain degree the validity of the argument that a certain amount of hubris is needed for advancement. But it is certainly meant to be an amuse bouche for the human race and not the main fucking course.
The kid was an Aquarius and to quote Chris Rock, I ain't saying he was right but I can understand. I have always thought that I was closer to the edge of being nuts than not. If I didn't have a kid, there is no way in hell I would be living the societal ordained life. But not Alaska. Fuck that, Paul Gauguin had it right. I have blogged about this before. If I could live any way I wanted to I'd either be doing relief work in Africa (talk about NOT Alaska!) or if I gave into my slothful side I'd live in a shack and do some anonymous coffee bar customer service job and spend every evening watching the sun go down on a beach. Maybe 6 months of each. That should handle the Madonna/Whore internal conflict nicely. Chris had a belief that a "career" is a societal construct that is pretty damn ridiculous. I can agree with that. I have never wanted a career. I have wanted to pay my bills and have enough left over to have some sort of fun, but not a career.
Of course when I was 8 I also asked my mom if I had to have a groom for a wedding. I wanted the pretty flowers and cake and the dress. Just not the guy. I should have listened to my 8 year old self!
Watching 120 Minutes on VH1 Classic. So far a decent night. Joy Division, U2, Midnight Oil, Sinead O'Conner, Blondie - and not the usual they playedX Offender from 1976 - so far tonight. Debbie Harry is and always be the ultimate chick rocker.
Alrighty I am off to get a brownie. This is going to be a super busy week. The Charity Auction is on Thursday and I am selling raffle tickets and chips on my lunch hours, plus babysitting the display room with all the baskets and items a couple times. Add that to having to reconcile the books and log all the payroll deductions...gonna be busy! But fun, our theme this year...and I doubt like hell anyone from A Great Big Catholic Insurance Co is reading this....
Queen of Hearts/Alison In Wonderland. We have pink flamingo croquet sets, costumes for the Queen, Alice, Mad Hatter and a Page. It's always fun and the decoration are always awesome but I think this year the committee outdid themselves.

Kidlet and her dad are going to a salon tonight for a hair cut and color as she was going to do it tomorrow with Mom. Love Mom but she has a tendency to cut a wee bit more than asked for and Kidlet's dad is adamant that Kidlet not end up with a gym teacher bowl cut, if you get my drift :P
REM is playing the Sasquatch Festival this year. Only thing with Sasquatch is I don't camp on my own. Might as well hang a sign on your tent that says single female come get me! But REM and The Cure and Modest Mouse and The Flaming Lips are playing so Kidlet has persuaded her dad to take her. I'd love to see REM but I can't afford the ticket plus hotel cost plus fuel cost. But the B52's are playing in May and tickets for them are only 20 bucks. That I can swing. Kidlet and I will go see them at the Roseland.

Howdy folks! I am back, still tired, still not totally inspired, but back. Watching American Idol and CNN for the primaries. I find it amusing - it is really not that odd of a juxtaposition. Idol is just a bit more honest in it's function as a popularity contest with little regard for substance. Oh and it far more honest in it's media whoredom.
I watched McCain's speech and while I have lost tremendous amounts of respect for since he became waffle man during the Bush years, but I do have to say the tone of his speech was decidedly NOT Rove-esque. It was pretty high road and lacked the usual "family values" aka fags are bad and choice is bad. He breezed right on over the economy and the war etc etc, but it was a change of pace from a republican. Maybe now that he is secure in the nomination he will get his nuts back from Bush and Cheney.
Hillary's speech was good, Obama's not up to his usual. The strain of front runner is showing I think. He has GOT to start talking about the nitty gritty. I get it, you want to inspire. There is an old saying I learned at my mother's knee and Barack should take a knee here.
Cock or walk, Obama. Talk in tangibles not platitudes.
I am telling you folks the hangover from that Kool Aide stands the chance of being pretty lethal. Hillary was not my first choice, but to me she is the one who seems like she could do more than just invite a problem over for tea and talk it to death. Hell his wife seems like she is more capable of grabbing something by the balls than Barack. Then she could club it to death with the massive chip she seems to have on her shoulder.
