World AIDS Day 2008 - The 20th Anniversary 12/01/2008

Here were are again folks, the band is still playing on. Tomorrow marks the 20th Anniversary of World AIDS Day. Twenty years. It boggles the mind. I have written in the past about my experiences with this disease, the patients I had, the funerals I went to. Some of you have read that post, but it's there for those who haven't. One of my better ones if I do say so myself.

This year I am going to go for the positive courtesy of my favorite Rock Star with a Messiah Complex, Bono. As you know Product (RED) was designed to allow you to buy items at places you probably already shop and know that a portion of the sales goes towards AIDS medicines for the sick and dying in Africa. Well RED has two new additions that I am just thrilled about.

First up, STARBUCKS! Yay! My coffee fixation and slavish adherence to the Cult of the Bean can finally do some good! For this I will force myself to have a gingerbread latte (one of only 2 flavored coffees I like I might add.)

Once the holidays are past, Starbucks and RED will continue their partnership with money going from select drinks and from bags of select coffees (yay!) to the Global Fund. Because we really are all connected and every penny counts.

And secondly, Bono has launched a new electronic music magazine called (RED)Wire. I like the nod to the song there, Mr. Hewson!

What is (RED)Wire? For $5 a month you will receive exclusive songs from artists such as U2, REM, Sheryl Crow and more. Plus a full electronic magazine. How do you get (RED)Wire? Well if you sign up now, you get two free months. After that it is $5 per month with half of that going to the Global Fund. It costs just $12 per month to provide someone the two pills a day they need to stay alive. So every five (RED)WIRE members generate enough money, every month, to help keep one person living with HIV in Africa alive. So just think, if 4 of you sign up, together we will be saving one human life. That's pretty amazing, don't you think?

You download the (RED)Player right to your desktop and every Wednesday, voila a magazine and a music file that is your, no protections. Burn and go. And yes, we will be getting a new U2 song from this. Before the album. Hold me down, peeps, hold me down! I get a new U2 song AND I get to help people. Something tells me The Baby Jebus would approve =)

Wait, Did He Just Say What I Think He Said?

The Center Of The Earth Is The End Of The World

Just some tunes swirling in my brain =)

First up Mindy Smith. Easily as good as Sarah or Sheryl. Easily. I used to say if I could pick one person's voice it would be Sarah Mac. Now I think I am leaning Mindy. She covers Jolene as well and she is very very good. Even Dolly approves. And in my mind when I was reading Twilight, she is who I imagined as Bella. Sorry KStew!

I am also on a mad Green Day kick. I am so looking forward to their next album. C'mon Billie, get over the mid life crisis! You are an aquarian, dammit, our entire lives are a crisis of some sort :P

And probably one of my all time favorite of their songs. Cause I am a sucker for teen angst at the 7-11. And Screamer aka Evan Rachel Dita Wannabe ruined Wake Me Up When September Ends.

And finally just cause I freakin LOVE this movie, I give you Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Oh yeah baby.

Tied Up In Ancient History, I Didn't Believe In Destiny

So I am on a roll with my mix tapes. This one literally created itself in my sleep. I woke up the morning after the Sisters concert. It was sunny. And before my coffee was done, this one was halfway finished. Cause I am a crackhead and all I am actually attempting to find the Youtube's for each song. Cause I like to kid myself that you all care :P

I called it You Don't Mess With The Wu-Cake Mix. See the comments on my last post for an explanation of Wu-Cake. Hold on to yourselves, it's a LOOOONG Mix.

Aqualung: Brighter Than Sunshine

Third Eye Blind: Never Let You Go

REM: Superman

Oasis: Lyla

OAR: Love and Memories

Bonnie Raitt: Angel From Montgomery

Mute Math: Typical (Forgot just how much I LOVE THIS SONG)

The Go-Gos's: Our Lips Are Sealed

Green Day: Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)

Five For Fighting: Easy Tonight (live version not the greatest sound)

New Radicals: Someday We'll Know

The Goo Goo Dolls: Slide

Lifehouse: Hanging By A Moment

Green Day: Warning (I was feeling Billie and Co this day)

Eve 6: Inside Out

Green Day: Walking Contradiction (well they ARE my second favorite band)

Johnny Nash: I Can See Clearly Now (bet you didn't see THAT one coming, eh?)

The Farm: Groovy Train (oh how I miss early 90's club)

Josh Joplin: Camera One

Travis: Why Does It Always Rain On Me? (Another song I forgot how much I loved)

Eddie Vedder: Hard Sun from the motion picture Into The Wild. I really enjoyed this movie and I recommend it highly. And the song gives me chills. Tie in to my current fangirlness, Kristen Stewart was in the movie.

Twilight The Movie Total Wu-Cake

Mmmk.

Saw Twilight.

LOVED IT!

Kidlet and I shall be seeing a few more times prior to it leaving the multiplexes. I went in not expecting a lot and loved every thing about it. They changed the plot up which, frankly, helped a lot cause as much as I totally understand Bella spending every waking moment pondering Edward's complete and total hotness, that would kinda make a lame movie. I particularly liked the fact that they lightened it up just a bit. Made Bella and Edward seem more like normal teens. For a girl and her vampire boyfriend that is.

And Rob Pattinson looks even better on a large screen than I thought he would. Move over Stuart, there's a new sheriff in town.

The Sisters concert was awesome. We were front row dead center at the barricade and had a great view. Ben Christo their lead guitarist was amazing. And Andrew was Andrew was Andrew. The experience of getting to sing This Corrosion back at Mr. A was a highpoint. Oh and Lucretia. Love me some Lucretia. Some douchebag stormed the stage in the final encore during Temple of Love and fucked up the mic's and such. Still Mr. A came back and finished up nicely. Kidlet and I hit Sheri's after for some Wu-Cakes. Inside joke y'all ;)

And The 52 Daughters Of The Revolution Turn The Gold To Chrome

And so it begins. Today I shall be in the presence of The Gothfather. The One and Only, Andrew Eldritch. I have babbled about Sisters before but I don't know that I have ever really given any history of them ala Vinny. Suffice it to say they formed back in 1980 and Andrew, along with Peter Murphy, Siouxsie, and Robert Smith are the progenitors of that which we call Goth. Or I should say that which *I* call Goth as the media and the general public concept of Goth is ridiculous.

We don't all wear black lace and corsets, we don't fantasize about dying, and not every goth is into Vampires.

Just the smart ones.

I kid, I kid!

A good portion of us old school folks didn't really dress the "scene" as it were at the time. 90% of the 80's I spent looking fairly fucking preppy. The other 10% of the time earned me the nickname Boots from a large portion of my male friends. Once again I tip my hat at Don and Randy for saving me from the hell that was Top 40 80's. Where ever you are guys, I thank you, I will always be there with coffee for your hangovers, and yes Don I really should have dated you instead of older guys ;0

Goth is not a fashion statement. It's not a music collection and it's really not an ethos. It's more a state of mind. Finding the beauty in the dark. Stephen King has a line in the Dark Tower series, "Ka is a wheel." Think of Ka as kharma or life and you get the picture. Goth is being able to see the creative forces in the dark. It's funny cause most people have a concept of us as gloomy sad depressives. In actuality most Gothy Folken are pretty damn optimistic.

We are also generally bright, usually dramatic, and into yanking chains. So we play up the stereotypes a lot for personal amusement. In short, let me borrow from A favorite website:

Why Goth?
Many people lead unhappy, unachieved lives. And that's sad.
Goth makes depression and angst a lifestyle choice, and that's art. ;-)
(note the wink)

Goth as counter-culture
1967: The hippie counter-culture saw that the world sucked and promised to change it with love.

1977: Punk culture saw that the world still sucked and raised a middle finger in defiance.

1981: Goths understood all along the importance of a good smoke.

So tonight I shall look like any other suburban mom in regular old clothes -well black pants and blood red shirt. Old habits and all that. And I shall sweep the cobwebs with the best of them and let my imagination run rampant in a world where lyrics run the gamut from Russian Revolution to Sci-Fi.

And then tomorrow I shall escape to the theater for a complete cheese fest. First off let me just say that Rob Pattinson is ridiculously good looking. I fully admit I would rob that cradle in a hot second. Mmm hmmm!

Ahem.

My good buddy and incestuously inclined brother from another mother, Matt Man has been fighting a sense of being jaded. I honestly don't think there is anything on this planet that causes a more soul sucking emptiness than feeling jaded.

Which is why I embrace my cheesey books and movies and see things like Titanic a retarded number of times. How much would it suck to not be able to feel that kind of magic from a book or movie or music? What would be the point? If don't allow yourself to believe - even just a tiny bit while in a darkened movie theater or curled up with a book - in that kind of a love story then what reason do you have to get out of bed.

The hate I see on message boards for this kind of "chick flick" is surprising. Guys...be happy we like these movies. It's the reason we are willing to believe in you enough to get you laid. Mmk? Although I do understand it to a point. It's the Lloyd Dobler/Jake Ryan/Jack Dawson/and now Edward Cullen syndrome. Yes you will be compared to these people and no you won't live up to it. Much like most girls will never live up to the Giselle's and Heidi Klum's of the world. At least ours are imaginary!

Do I believe in love at first sight and soulmates? Eh not really. I think there are probably several people we can click with. Some clicks are just louder. And my cheesey movies and books celebrate that fact.

It's also the reason I don't date. Hopeless romantics should not date. We are too kind and too trusting and too likely to be a doormat. Unless I borrow some of Matt's jadedness ;)

Edit to add: Meant to put this up. I love this song. Had to share.

All I Can Say Is That My Life Is Pretty Plain

So we know have a diagnosis for Kidlet and her weird stomach stuff. Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome. And it's tied to Migraine headaches! She feels better know what is going on and we have medicines and a plan now.

Busy weekend. It's SISTER TIME!! So very very excited about seeing the Gothfather and Co.(suck it Andrew, I can call you that) tomorrow night. I frankly never thought I would see them live. Evah. Now if only Echo and Bunnymen would tour. We won't mention The Smiths because Mozza is a brat.

Then Sunday we see Twilight. And laundry. And I am working tomorrow. And I am sleepy. And I can't find my damn namebadge. Which sucks since it is my cafe food card AND gets me into the building. And Kidlet's dad might be unemployed soon which also sucks. Even the mega companies are crashing and burning. Bleh.

It's moderately sunny today! Hence the post title inspiration. Oh and it is on my latest mix cd. I love The Bee Girl =)

Why Does It Always Rain On Me?

I am grounded. I am grounded to my room and all my books (specifically the Twilight Saga) are to be turned over to my mom. Yes, Gentle Readers, she is hooked now too. I am gonna buy her a ticket to the Sunday show Kidlet and I are going to.

Kidlet's appointment went well. I LOVE her doctor. They are sending her to PT to start off with to see if loosening her up will help. Once she has done that for 3 months or so we will go back and see if the Doc wants to do more diagnostics.

Today is her Gastrology appointment to see if she does indeed have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Which I would bet my hat on since she woke up in the night puking after stressing about friends and a guitar performance in front of her entire school. Seems one of her (MANY) guy friends volunteer her to play guitar with him and a bunch of her other guy friends. She be tweakin. And her best friends are acting up a bit and that is freaking her out. Poor girl. She has reached the point in time where she gets along WAY better with guys than girls. Just like her mom. Girls hated me. Guys adored me.

This Is Jezebel In Hell

We had a lovely weekend here in Starr Country. Although we have had serious English Moors type mist and fog in the mornings. Very atmospheric. Saturday I worked, and then got Kidlet extra as her Dad and his GF had a birthday party to go to. Sunday after I dropped Kidlet off, I went antiquing with my mom. It was a lovely day for a ride and thankfully gas prices are down.

Work is work is work. Had my review. Boss Lady was highly complimentary and gave me a nice raise. More than I was expecting in fact. That is always a plus. Just celebrated my 8th year working for the Catholics. It will be 7 in this position come January. Prov will be the one thing I really miss about Oregon. They are just an awesome company to work for.

Stupid Poe song is totally stuck in my head. To be clear, the song is not stupid and I LOVE Poe but now I am going to be stuck with it. Grr.

This week we have specialist appointments out the ying yang for Kidlet. The Rheum one tomorrow and the Gastro one on Thursday. Thursday night we are also volunteering for Cascade AIDS Projects Red Ribbon Event. Bingo and Drag Queens and Martini's Oh My!

I have been slackerific on postings, and Wordless Wednesdays and my Thursday Thirteens and honestly I don't see that changing this week. I have to get kidlet to upload a bunch of pics from our beach trip and some gorgeous tree ones she took. I have, like, 6 Thursday Thirteens started as well and multiple ideas for others but frankly my brain is cooking on two mix cd's I am making and ripping more of my collection to my computer. I screwed up and bought DVD's instead of CD's. Although I suppose I can finally send the ex his versions of the cd's :P Not that I talk to him but I am fairly certain he is still where he was a year ago. Hell, 8 years ago.

Tidbit. My fairy tattoo is named Jezebel =) Two from Poe for you. First up Angry Johnny which gives us today's post title. Second one is probably my second favorite Poe song, Hey Pretty.

Our Intentions Always Last That Bit Too Long

I'd like to go on record as saying I hate Paramore. That stupid girl sounds like she stuck marbles in her mouth to achieve her annoying mush mouth "wittle girl" voice. I hates it my precious. I want to smack her in the head.

Where did this come from you ask? Cause Miss Gobbledeegook and her band have 2 freakin songs on the Twilight soundtrack. Hate em both. Kidlet will probably hate them too. I would bet good money on her hating the Linkin Park track. Or Lickin Pork as she calls them. I don't mind them although the song on the soundtrack is odd in that unlike most songs I am ambivalent on, I love the sound of the verses but the chorus just ruins it for me. Usually it is the other way around.

It's growing on me. That said I can think of a few replacement songs I am gonna put with the mix. I am shocked, shocked I tell you that they did not put Clair de Lune on it. Seriously people. Come on!

It also has band on it I have never heard of, The Black Ghosts. Seriously. Never heard of them. Couple of Brit boys reared by their families on Horror Movies and Granny the Psychic.I shall be getting their albums right quick and in a hurry. And Damon Alburn of Blur/Gorillaz is a guest vocalist on one of them. If it gets the Damon Thumbs Up I am really looking forward to it. Me loves Damon.

How could I *NOT* have heard of these guys? It's hard to describe their sound. The idea of a strong bass line with violins would not have occurred to me. It's obviously electronic with a hint of dirge and folk. Electric Folk? Folky Electronic? Dunno but I LOVE this song.

In addition a song from one of my favorite bands, Collective Soul is on it. What with David Cook being all Collective Souly on Idol and now Twilight I am so hoping more people give them a listen.

Also on the album is this one from Iron and Wine. Who are uber perky. I kid. Actually they are musically pretty with very odd lyrics. Fat house cat indeed. This song is quirkier than me and that is saying a lot.

And finally what is probably gonna end up be one of my all time favorite songs, an original for the film from always quirky Perry Farrell. Although I am trying to figure just where this puppy fits in the story. I mean look at the picture and figure on this song. I even know which scene it is and this song just seems freakin weird. Kidlet...truck scene. Just hrmm.

Other artists include Mute Math (love them) and Carter Burwell -he does the Coen Boys scores and did the entire score for this as well. The afore mentioned Paramore, Blue Foundation and Rob Pattinson channeling Buckley round out the soundtrack. That kid is made. MADE I tell you. I understand there was intense drama over the casting of him as Edward cause he was in those Potter movies. That and there are a ton of girls out there with their own mental image of Edward. He works for me. He gorgeous in that old fashioned Bronte/Austin kind of way and looks like he pulls off vamp quite well. And he sings. And he's English.

Set. For. Life.

You Will Be The Death Of Me

Um, yeah. I have been assimilated. I have scoffed at the Twilight saga since I first heard of it. Then Kidlet read the first two this summer and has been on my butt to read them. So I did. And um....

Team Edward FTW.

Seriously, it is NOT great writing from a literary standpoint. The plot rewrite of both Romeo and Juliet and even more so Wuthering Heights is blindingly obvious to the well read. Although I doubt most of the target audience would know a Bronte if she reared up from her grave and bit their ass.

And I have to keep in mind it IS young adult fiction. But whew. Edward is dee-frickin-vine. Sorry Annie Rice. Sorry Poppy Z. I never had the hots for any of your vampires. Stuart Townsend finally breathed some sex appeal into Lestat for me and that is cause, duh, he is Stuart Townsend. In the novel Lestat was not at all hot. Sorry Annie girl. Don't get me wrong I adore Lestat. He is amusing as all get out. Just not hot.

And while the kid who plays Edward in the movie is all fine and dandy for the part in MY mind I see a very young Stuart as Edward. Wowzers. The author states she created Edward to be the "perfect" man. Well she did good by my estimation. Of course he doesn't exist vampire or otherwise anymore than say Lloyd Dobler exist - outside of the prism of his obvious traits that came straight from Cusack himself.

So I was up till 1 am last night reading book two. I have to go pick up 3 and 4 tomorrow and drop 3 off with Kidlet. Now I have to endure screaming teenage girls wearing Team Edward shirts for the movie. Oh and the idiots with Team Jacob shirts - seriously who does a werewolf over a vamp?! Wet dog is NOT hot.

So that is why my fellow bloggers I have been absent. I literally can NOT put these down. Oh and for the record I am not a Hairy Pooter fan. To me those read like Cliff Notes for Tolkein wannabees. Bleh.

Of course the kid who plays Edward was IN the Potter movies. And if this one takes off like I expect it will, he is set for life.

Cause let's face it, Vamps own Wizards. End of story. The ultimate bad boy will always win out over scrawny dudes with wands ;)

Also the author digs Muse. How can I not like a chick who likes Vamps and Muse?

I Don't Ever Want To Play The Part Of A Statistic On A Government Chart

Yay! It is vacation weekend!! Well tomorrow. Today it is Saturday at work day again. I be am sad. I took a 4 day course of cortisone for my exema and the lovely side effect was that my knee finally stopped hurting! It's been on my ass since the day after the AIDS walk. So two days after I stopped taking the cortisone? Boom. Knee fuckage again. I am going to have to make an appointment when we get back and go see my doc and get an xray. I am pretty sure it is bursitis. Better not try to give me a shot in my knee or I will hurl on her. I swear.

Kidlet had her back xray and it shows some funkiness with her lower vertebrae. So we get to take her to a Ped's rheum to have that evaluated. Cross fingers it is not a spondylarthopathy. Day after she has the Rheum appointment she has the Gastro appointment. Since IBD goes with some of those SA diseases the time is good. She is not amused. I am not amused. Stupid autoimmune crap.

After the Gastro appointment we are going to be greeters at CAP's Red Ribbon Event. That should be fun. We gotta remember to wear bright red. The charity auction is starting to ramp up and so is my fundraising work for Kidlet's trip to DC.

But first we get to go to the coast this weekend. Back to the Overleaf Lodge. My friend Hope and I are going halvsies on a suite as it ended up being all of about 10 bucks a night more than single rooms. Plus we have a Jacuzzi in the corner window right over the ocean. Monday we are going into Newport for Girl's Spa Day. Hope is doing a salt scrub (very oceanic of her) while Kidlet and I are doing massages and soaking our less than pretty feet in peppermint soaks. We have a kitchen so we can avoid eating out. We are gonna get crab and fruit and cheese and watch a lot of movies and hang out.

LOL! Need more coffee. Just published this before I was done. Durrrrrrrr......

I am gonna MAKE that child of mine upload her damn photo's to flicr so I can set her up an albums. Oh...note to self, buy batteries for Kidlet's camera.

I am pondering making soup and taking it with us. Potato cheese sound dee-lish. Mine is deeee-lish. I could make it and we could have some tonight and then take down the rest for tomorrow night. Hrmm. The Lodge feeds us Breakfast so we just need to cover lunch and dinner. Maybe the Adobe for dinner one night. We shall see. We come back Tuesday. I am looking forward to a nice relaxing trip.

Music time! Ya know I can't leave you without some sort of music. I am pondering my mood musically today. Hrmms. Time for random shufflage. AH hah!!!

The Police and Bono - Invisible Sun circa 1986. It's Hatman and Wonder Nehru (watch the vid) together at last! I always thought those two didn't get along. Guess not. Here is a bit of Starr trivia. Synchronicity so not my favorite album. In fact I damn near hate it. Well not hate but much like Stairway to Heaven if I never have to hear Wrapped Around Your Finger, King of Pain or Every Breath or Synchronicity again I would not weep. Although I do love Walking In Your Footsteps. It is the only one that sounds like it could have dropped off of Ghost In The Machine. Which is my favorite (by a smidge over Regatta) Police album. Oh and I like Tea in The Sahara as well.

Walking In Your Footsteps - Live Montreal 1983.

More 80's for you, my second favorite Furs song, All That Money Wants

Oh my god, I am old. The Plimsouls - Million Miles Away live 2007.

And finally my favorite Bob Marley song, Lively Up Yourself. You gotta be lively, y'all. Happy Weekend, Peeps!

Wordless Wednesday #69 - Heck, Speechless

"Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn't matter with me now. Because I've been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land. And I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord."

I Never Thought I Would See The Day

and I am so proud to be American right now! Now I can't wait to hear who he names to his cabinet.

Come Up And See Me, Make Me Smile

Just a bunch of viddy's tossed out for your viewing pleasure. I am taking Kidlet for her lower back xray and then making phone calls for THAT ONE this afternoon.

First up I am KICKING my own ass for leaving this off my earlier Thursday Thirteen post dealing with cover songs. For this one I fucking adore with the same whole heartedness I had at 13. Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me) originally done by Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel. DD really need to tour again. Cause I am so taking Kidlet. Here for you viewing, circa 1982 live.

This next one I like just cause the stress of this entire election has left me somewhat cranky. I feel this song expresses my inner angst.

Downing Pool - Bodies

See? Was that healing and cathartic? No? Really? Mmk, try this one then. I used Massive Attack featuring Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins yesterday. And I can't think Liz without thinking Lisa. Although Brendan Perry is no vocal slouch either. So for todays vocals that will stop you in your tracks I give you Dead Can Dance. It's hard to describe DCD. They have a range that is pretty fantastic. This first clip is a live cover of an old Irish ballad, The Wind That Shakes The Barley.

Next up Summoning of the Muse

And to given Brendan his due, Rakim

Loves it.

Love, Love Is A Verb

Just Cause. The video is pretty amazing and the song is awesome. And yes, House samples it. But Vinny Bond got Liz Fraser and Cocteau/Massive Attack/Dead Can Dance/Mortal Coil frame of mind.

Love, love is a verb
Love is a doing word
Feathers on my breath
Gentle impulsion
Shakes me makes me lighter
Feathers on my breath

Teardrop on the fire
Feathers on my breath

In the night of matter
Black flowers blossom
Feathers on my breath
Black flowers blossom
Feathers on my breath

Teardrop on the fire
Feathers on my breath

Water is my eye
Most faithful my love
Feathers on my breath
Teardrop on the fire of a confession
Feathers on my breath
Most faithful mirror
Feathers on my breath

Teardrop on the fire
Feathers on my breath

You're stumbling a little
You're stumbling a little
