Just Keep Me Where The Light Is

I was pondering my earlier post this week on my Thursday Thirteen and Bond's post on Huddie Ledbetter Leadbelly and RWA's post on Clapton and the song Layla and I have guitarists on the brain.

There are a lot of technically proficient guitarists out there but it is a rare breed that plays with that obvious love of the guitar and particularly Blues guitar. Perhaps that is why I have such an affection for John Mayer.

And seeing as how he hangs with BB and Eric and John Lee Hooker, I suppose I am not the only one. He's in an odd position in that I think most folks think of him as a "pop singer" and while it may be true that his can craft one hell of a pop song, it's his blues influenced work that really sets him apart. Hell, he can even make Timberlake sound like he's got soul. This, my friends, is talent. Yes, the above 2 minute clip is the interlude portion of Justin Timberlake's Love Stoned/I Think She Knows. John is so frickin talented it hurts. If you are one of those trapped in the Your Body Is A Wonderland mindset, give this one a listen.

I Could Have Sworn You Were An Angel

Sheet. Now I have Divine Thing stuck in my head. Another song that is molding out there in cyber land on my once and former hard drive. Bleh.

How can a band put out a song as awesome as Clocks and then proceed to pretty much suck? Cause Speed of Sound is like Clocks pt 2 and like most sequels, no where near as good. Talk is just awful. Chris sounds like some horrid whiny refugee from a chick flick sans tits. It's repellently metrosexual. There is only *1* other Coldplay song I dig and that would be the live version of Moses.

And Coldplay people, don't tell me to listen to "deeper cuts" cause I own X and Y and just yawn. And he skips like a girl. When your dance moves make Bono (who Chris Martian will NEVER be) look like Tony from Saturday Night Fever, you know you got problems. But Clocks? Awesome song. Love it. It's a good day on the radio. Now if only they would play the Soup Dragons.

So mini musical rant out of the way, I am curious to see what feedback I get on the guitar list other than Desert who mentioned we were going to have overlap. My parents seemed mighty tetchy about the lack of the "Triad" of Clapton Beck and Page. I will say it again, I tried to steer away from the obvious pantheon of rock god solos. I mean be real. Would Stairway to Heaven really have shown any originality? And picking lesser known Zep songs just to prove I know their back catalogue seemed a bit pretentious. I will wait to see what The Couch has to say. Oh and pray for me people. While my car is in being serviced (my car is getting some while I am not. The irony) I am driving Mom's vintage baby. Which is really a great car except the fucking stereo is locked with the anti-theft thing and they don't know the code. I am tuneless!!!! GAH! The road rage quotient in Oregon just went up, people.

Tiny baby post today cause I was up late and in early and I barely know my own name :P
